Renovation Plans for Rekha Gupta’s Official Bungalow Withdrawn Amid Political Scrutiny
The Delhi government has cancelled a ₹60 lakh tender for the renovation of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s official residence, citing administrative reasons, according to official documents referenced in a PTI report. The proposed works included the installation of 14 air conditioners, multiple televisions, and various electrical fixtures.
This development has reignited political tensions, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of hypocrisy and unjustified expenditure. AAP leaders drew parallels between the planned upgrades to Gupta’s residence and the criticism previously directed at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the renovation of his official bungalow.
According to coverage by The Tribune, AAP MLA Anil Jha stated in a press conference last month that Gupta was likely to be allotted two adjoining bungalows,1/8 and 2/8 Raj Niwas Marg, each comprising 15 rooms. He alleged that renovation orders had already been issued, based on information from reliable sources.
Jha further accused the BJP of maintaining double standards, arguing that the same leaders who had condemned Kejriwal’s spending were now silent on Gupta’s proposed residence. He described the plans as a “maya mahal,” suggesting an indulgent and excessive use of public funds. This incident underscores the persistent politicisation of official entitlements and public expenditure in Delhi’s governance landscape.
Editor’s Note:
The cancellation of the ₹60 lakh renovation tender for Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s residence raises important questions about transparency and political consistency. While the government cites administrative reasons, the timing and scale of the proposed upgrades invite scrutiny. The Aam Aadmi Party’s criticism highlights a familiar pattern. Leaders who once condemned spending on official housing now appear to justify similar plans. Public funds must be used with care, and all parties should be held to the same standards. Voters deserve honesty, not selective outrage.
Skoobuzz points out that it is concerning when political discussions focus more on personal benefits than public policy. Expensive renovations, whether they go ahead or not, send the wrong message, especially when public services are under strain. It adds that accountability should apply equally, no matter which party is in power.
